Journey of an Architect is a blog started by Tim Ung to document his journey to design 30 projects by the age of 30 (May 2020). His posts focus on his design process, thoughts, struggles, and successes throughout his journey.

Refocusing the Blog

Refocusing the Blog

In early 2016, I started Journey of an Architect and jumped right into designing 30 theoretical projects to refine my design process, find my style of architecture, and eventually start a practice of my own. A little more than two years after starting this blog, I’ve completed 27 projects and diverged into product design and writing. Slowly, but surely, this blog is turning into more than I ever envisioned it would be and it’s time for me to redesign and refocus Journey of an Architect.

Focusing on Two Categories; Life and Design

If you’ve been following me for the past two years, you’ve probably noticed that I generally write about my experiences and thoughts on career, health, personal growth, entrepreneurship, and design. At the beginning of this blog, I was afraid to openly share some of my opinions because I was afraid of the criticism and judgement that I would potentially receive.

Once Journey of an Architect started to take off, I slowly found my voice and my writing style. I gained the confidence that I needed to share my opinions in anticipation of the comments that I might receive. Now, I spend less time revising my posts so that they can remain as subjective and true to my beliefs as possible with the hope that it can help others out there in the architecture and design community.

What does this mean for Journey of an Architect?

For the future of this blog, which I’d like to continue after completing my 30th project in my 30x30 series, I want to write deep and meaningful posts about my life as an architect, product designer, and entrepreneur by reorganizing the blog into two sections; life and design. In order to write these thoughtful posts that I hope will inspire you, I’ll be investing more time into each one. This means I’ll only post when I have something worth sharing and after I’ve refined it to my satisfaction.

What are the categories that I’ll be focusing on with Journey of an Architect?

Let’s talk about Life

Life will focus on a variety of topics from career development to health and finances to my success and failures with my companies (so far, I only have Mars Leather Company). My decision to separate and focus on life with this blog is based on my retrospective personality and my urge to share some of my experiences and ideas about what it’s like to be an architect. From the struggles that I’ve had and my observations from the field, I’d like to bring my thoughts together on topics that have been on stewing in my mind.

Continuing my Designs

Design will focus on my 30x30 projects, which have been a major focus of Journey of an Architect. I’ll continue sharing my progress on these projects with my research, precedent studies, and design ideas. I’d also like to share more of my opinions on the reasons why I’ve decided to pursue some of these 30x30 projects so that you can get a better understanding of what motivates me to be an architect and designer. I’ll also be writing about my product designs for my leather business, Mars Leather Company, and how each product is being developed.

Think of this as a way of getting into my mind and getting an insider’s perspective of my design process.

Conclusion

Over the next month or two, I’ll be sorting through all of my previous posts on this blog and keeping the ones that relate to this new direction while deleting the others. I’ll also be slightly redesigning the website so that it’s organized and easier to navigate. Most of all, I’ll be making a list of topics that I’ve wanted to write about for a long time! Stay tuned for the next evolution of Journey of an Architect!
